Foundry Group present: "Those Manificent Men"

2019 was the centenary of one of the greatest moments of aviation history and a truly British First – the first ever non-stop flight across the Atlantic.

The nail-biting, side-splitting true story of this daredevil flight by pilot Capt. John Alcock and navigator Lt. Arthur Whitten Brown is told in the hit stage play ‘Those Magnificent Men’ by acclaimed writing duo Mitchell & Nixon, originally produced by New Perspectives Theatre Company in 2010/2011 and revived in 2015 by The Foundry Group. (Joseph Nixon has just been nominated for an Olivier Award for best comedy play, 'The shark is broken').

In the tiny open cockpit of a converted Vickers biplane, Alcock and Brown flew from Newfoundland through dense fog, sleet, snow and hail – sometimes upside down – to Ireland and worldwide celebrity.

To commemorate this centenary, the Foundry Group is once more reviving its highly popular production, starring Radio 4 regular David Mounfield (‘Count Arthur Strong’s Radio Show’) and writer/performer Brian Mitchell (‘The Ministry of Biscuits’) who endeavor to tell the epic tale with just cardboard, two stools and some left-over props.

So strap yourself in and cry “Chocks away!” for a night of thrills, spills and uproarious comedy.

‘Wonderfully entertaining….has the makings of a West-End hit.’ – The Times

‘An up, up and away fringe hit! Spiffing perfection.’ – The Daily Telegraph

There will be a fish and chip supper during the interval, included in the ticket price. If you would prefer a vegan option, we offer Vegan "sping roll. leave a comment when ordering your plaices. Sorry - places.

Stand Up For Burbage! - At The Conni Club

Stand Up For Burbage! - At The Conni Club

Date: Fri 06 May, 2022

Time: 20:00

Doors Open 19:30.

SOLD OUT (again) - Sorry!

Our regular Master of Ceremonies, Alan Seaman, is here once again, to oversee and introduce three more of his funny chums.

Who have we got, this year?

.

GOOD KIDS

Good KidsKieran Ahern and Tom Dowling, aka Good Kids, met in the playground at the age of 4. They're daft, weird and lairy. They have been taking the Midlands and wider UK comedy scene by storm for the last few years and have been nominated for a bunch of awards. Kieran is the curvaceous one and Tom is the other one.

“They're stupid, daft, at times nonsensical. Funny yes but daft as brushes. Just how I love my comedy. Thank the stars they went into stand up and not health care.” - Johnny Vegas

"It was mad but it was hilarious" - Tom Rosenthal

Good Kids have been named as one of Chortle's 'Ones to Watch for 2022'

HOWARD WALKER

Howard Walker Flyer

We all have a dream don't we. Some of us have lots. I once dreamed that Davros from Doctor Who was chasing me. Put the willies up me it did. Then I had another dream that the "Mash get Smash" men were chasing after me so I went to hide, and then my granddad turned up and told them to leave me alone (he seemed to know them somehow, probably from the adverts) but they still got me and gave me an electric shock. That was weird.

I think the moral of this story is that no matter how much you want something, if you don't succeed, just try something else. Ideally something that doesn't involve playing a guitar because it's difficult. Trust me. And don't listen to people who say playing guitar is easy, it's not; I tried for nearly 4 weeks.

Dreams though. Aspirations. Howard had a dream; he wanted to be a rock star. He tried. He tried so, so indifferently that he never succeeded. So after many years of half arsed-ness, he had another dream and put a bit more effort in. About time.  He dreamed he wanted to be a stand up comedian, so this time he did it. You don't have to learn the guitar you see.

"A natural stage presence, an instantly amenable demeanour, inventive imagery and the best comedic use of a Belgian place name even the most ardent chuckle chaser will ever hear" - Stagefright Comedy

HANNAH SILVESTERHannah Sylvester Guitar

Hannah has been performing on the stand up comedy circuit since 2011. Based in the West Midlands she is a regular on both the local and national circuits.

Her adult set combines frank and honest stand up comedy with a warm delivery and the occasional comedy song thrown into the mix.

'A unique voice in the comedy world' - Juice Comedy

'Hilariously viciously blunt' - Chortle

"With guitar in hand and a west midlands accent she had the crowd laughing straight away with her very own comedic song which reminded me of vintage Jasper Carrott" - Swadlincote Post

.

Doors Open: 7:30PM. There is a bar. Of course.

George Egg - DIY Chef at the Millennium Hall

George Egg - DIY Chef at the Millennium Hall

Date: Wed 11 May, 2022

Time: 19:30

Doors Open 19:00

This event is now SOLD OUT! Sorry! Still looking for something to make you laugh? Try Mervyn Stutter

A first for Burbage Festival!

Following sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe as well as extensive touring in the UK and beyond, award winning comedian George Egg presents his unique and utterly absurd comedy show, "George Egg - DIY CHEF", demonstrating ingenious live cooking and laugh-out-loud stand-up comedy.

George's doctor has demanded he must rethink his diet so his family have banned him from using the kitchen. They've sent him to the shed. But George simply has to keep cooking and this unstoppable urge leads to inventive creations, innovative solutions and some seriously tasty food.

Funny, inspiring and absurd in equal measure, it's a cross-genre show as much as a stand-up comedy set as an illustrated lecture. Expect power tools, gardening equipment and office supplies to be re-purposed and abused. Expect laughs. Expect to learn something new. And expect to taste the food at the end (at your own risk, of course!)

George egg drill

  • "A culinary Bill Bailey, with chopping boards instead of keyboards. It is a multi-sensory delight to spend an hour with him" The Scotsman
  • "There is a mischeviousness about Egg's humour that is deeply loveable" Grace Dent in The Guardian
  • "Egg flawlessly blends jokes, cooking tips, obscure facts, and some tongue in cheek poems" Edinburgh Festivals Magazine
  • "George Egg serves up one of the freshest experiences on the Fringe" The List
  • "This is a triumph of out-of-the-box thinking — and tastes lovely too" Metro

The Dirt Road Band with Holly Hewitt at the Conni Club

The Dirt Road Band with Holly Hewitt at the Conni Club

Date: Thu 12 May, 2022

Time: 20:00

We are sorry to have to announce that this performance has been cancelled due to illness within the band. All tickets will be refunded

The Dirt Road Band is the brainchild of guitar legend Steve Walwyn, mainly known as the longest-serving guitar player of Dr Feelgood (32 years). During this time he has amassed a massive reputation as a bona fide blues here in the UK, Europe and beyond. He says, "I always liked the idea of the power trio - stripping everything back to the basics: guitar, bass, drums."

Bass player Horace Panter is better known as the founding member of The Specials. "Horace has 'groove' imprinted on his DNA. Holding it down comes as second nature."

Steve has further recruited the services of drummer Ted Duggan - Professional since the 60's, including stints with Badfinger and world techno giants Banco deGia. "I'd worked with Ted before," Steve says, "I knew he would fit this gig perfectly." He certainly does.

DRB pics

This, then, is Steve's dream team rhythm section that swings as hard as it rocks. "We're starting to develop that musical telepathy that makes a band more than just the sum of its parts. It's a thrilling thing and keeps the blues alive."

Guesting tonight with the band on a return to Burbage Festival is Jazz & blues singer Holly Hewitt.

Date: Fri 13 May, 2022

Time: 20:00

Doors open 19:30

It's been too many YEARS, since Mervyn last graced the boards here at BCAF, with his acerbic wit and comedy songs. He is back, and he has a post-pandemic question:

SO, WHERE WERE WE?.....

Merv here again with another helping of wonderful new comedy songs and audience banter in a joyous 90 minute show of life affirming fun. He chats a bit, tells a few jokes, makes some pithy observations with lots of clever comedy songs on guitar. His sometimes wicked but always affectionate sense of humour brings warmth and joy to audiences who are happy to laugh both at his life and their own. Clever, intelligent, funny and clean.

“Stutter is a sharp as any, as funny as any and more informed than most.” The Times

“For comedy straight from the heart they don’t come much better than Mervyn”  Edinburgh Post

“Mervyn arrived a stranger to all of us but by the end of the show he felt like an old friend. Lovely personable man. Can we have him back soon?” Elmbridge

“We often say ‘the best show yet’. But this really WAS the best show yet” Peatling Magna

“some of the funniest songs to be heard on the Fringe this year or any year for that matter”  Edinburgh Evening News

“Stutter is fabulous - his command of the stage is something that many of the acts he punctuates can only hope one day to achieve.” Broadway Baby

Mervyn Stutter is a satirical songwriter, comedian, actor, scriptwriter and has been touring the village halls of England for nearly 25 years now and audiences love him. He's written and starred in his own long running comedy series on both Radio 2 and Radio 4 as well as performing for many years in theatre and cabaret. The Festival welcomes back another regular, Chaz from Wayside Willow. He seeks to bring the ancient craft of Willow weaving to Twenty First Century learners, engaging them with historical skills and techniques, while cultivating  creative thinking and problem solving.

Chaz says: "l believe we are all created to be creative - its a core part of our humanity. Some people never find that place inside them. I know from experience that willow can help free that creative spark  in people who think of themselves as non-artistic."

Wishing Tree unveiling

Wishing Tree unveiling

Date: Sat 14 May, 2022

Time: 14:15

Next Saturday 14 May at 2:15PM, we will be unveiling a “Wishing Tree” sculpture, just outside the Burbage Community Library on the corner of Church St / Lychgate Lane.

You are most welcome to join us!

The sculpture is a gift from Burbage Festival (AKA “BCAF”) back to the village, as an all-year round memento.

The five-feet tall sculpture was commissioned by Burbage Festival and made by Kurt Lightfoot from Orna-Metal in Peterborough (seen on the left of the picture) who specialises in sheet metal artwork.

BCAF committee member Julia Gore (on the right of the picture) says, “After two long years away,  we celebrate the return of the Burbage Festival and the Jubilee year with this wonderful sculpture, for all to enjoy. We thought the ‘Wishing Tree’ would be a lasting and cheerful focal point to bring a smile to everyone’s face”

The official unveiling ceremony will be by BBC East Midlands reporter, Amy Payne, who grew up in Burbage. She is attending in a personal capacity.

Many folk have contributed to bring this sculpture to life, but in particular we'd like to mention:

  • Kurt Lightfoot the scultor
  • Graham Linney of Paramount for the foundations
  • Phil and Marian Naldret for ground work
  • Jo Hooper for work on a protective cover
  • Amy Payne - our special guest!
  • Julia and Dave Gore who came up with the idea and expertly project managed it to completion!

The ceremony coincides with a Burbage Festival event taking place in the Library – local favourite, Tom The Tale Teller, with his imaginative stories for children.

The timing of the event also marks the last weekend of the 2+ week long festival, and will be a chance to look back on what is looking like being something of a record-breaker, in terms of attendance figures.

Come along and celebrate this unveiling with us.
